Vote for Safe Drinking Water

In December of 2010 the Environmental Working Group published the first national investigation into our water supply and its contamination with chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium), a potential carcinogen. They looked at the water supply of 35 cities nation-wide, with 31 of them containing chromium-6.

I blogged about this report back in December if you want a quick refresher.

Due to this report, Washington is taking action. Senators Barbara Boxer (D-California) and Dianne Feinstein (D-California) introduced Senate Bill 79, which is the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children From Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011.

This Act would require the EPA to set a safe limit for chromium-6 in drinking water within one year. For those who didn’t reread by blog about, chromium-6 was the chemical in the water in Hinkley, California that was/is thought to have caused all of the health problems in that area a few years ago. The lawsuit made Erin Brockovich famous and won Julia Roberts her only Oscar.

Not only did the EWG find that those 31 cities had contaminated water, their findings were confirmed by many water utilities running their own testing.

Within hours of the EWG report being released, the EPA announced that it would help local utilities assess chromium-6 in drinking water. This is good, but it must lead somewhere.

Recently the head of the EWG testified before Congress about this situation, encouraging them to not just assess the levels of chromium-6, but to set a safe legal limit of its levels in our drinking water.

We have the right to clean and safe drinking water, and we need our voices to be heard. Click here TODAY to tell your senators to co-sponsor the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalent Chromium Act of 2011.

It only takes 1 minute of your day to fill this out, so please do so.
